Choosing Toy Jewelry for Your Children

Anyone who has raised children understands that they go through the “dress up” phase. It can be cute, with the pitter-patter of little feet temporarily replaced by the clomp-clomp of adult shoes. And who doesn’t have pictures of their little ones’ shining faces adorned with waaaay too much make-up? We even give our youngsters toy cell phones in order to keep them from getting their wee hands on our own.

Kids Will Be Kids

The fun and games tend to stop, though, when a child loses or damages a piece of fine jewelry while engaging in some fanciful grown-up behavior. There is no sound that creates more inner dread than the clattering of beads (or jewels) as they hit the floor and roll away to those dark places that only they will know. So it would make perfect sense that there are plenty of inexpensive choices in the jewelry market.

Nothing Like the Real Thing

Although there is not shortage of toy jewelry, you could festoon your age-appropriate child with real pieces, not just the kind you get for a quarter out of a vending machine, at very affordable prices. Even kids know the difference between toy jewelry and “the real thing”, meaning, something that they would see a grown-up wearing. Dollar stores are great sources of a variety of necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings and broaches that will look good on anyone (adult or child) and that won’t make you see red – as in ink – if it comes up missing or destroyed.

Some parents may even wish to take the “Teach a Man to Fish” approach, and see if their progeny might not be a prodigy when it comes to making jewelry. Websites like eBay offer an alternative to shopping at your local bead stores (where selection may be limited, and prices are swollen by sales tax). There, for very little money, one can assemble the tools, wire, beads, pendants, charms, crimps, wire guards and everything else required to start stringing your own unique wares. It’s as educational as it is fun, and provides your child with the ability to create one-of-a-kind pieces, either to wear themselves or to give away as truly unique gifts.
